Walkdownaflagstone-pavedroad,youwillgettoNo.10ZhongyingStreet.ThehousewastheformerresidenceofMr.ShenCong-wen,anillustriousChinesewriterandarcheo-logist.Thehousewasbuiltbyhisgrandfather,ShenHongfu,inthefirstyearoftheQingDynastyTongzhiEmperor'sreign(1886).ShenCongwenwasbornonDecember28,1902inthiscombinationMingandQingstylequadranglelikehouse.Hespenthisboyhoodandformativeyearshere.Hisfamily'sfinancialsituationdeclinedwhenhewasyoung.In1917Mr.Shenlefthishometownandjoinedthelocalarmyattheageof15andthenspentyearsroamingaroundalongYuanRiver,andYouRiver,witnessingwar-tornareas.Fromtheseexperiences,hedevelopedagreatinterestinwriting.In1919Mr.ShenwenttoBeijingandstartedhiswritingcareerwithgreatdifficulties.HisliteraryworkslikeBorderTownandNorthwestHunanmadehimwell-knowninChineseliterarycircles,andhebecamealmostasfamousasLuXun,whowas20yearsolderthanhim.Followingthe1950s,Mr.ShendevotedhimselftothestudyoftraditionalChinesegarments,writingTheStudyofTraditionalChineseGarments,aremarkableacademicworkinthefield.

AswepassthroughFenghuang'sHallofFame,whichisasidearmoftheConfuciusTemple,aflagstonepathtakesustoNo.10WenxingStreet.ThisistheformerresidenceofMr.XiongXiling,thefirstprimeministeroftheRepublicofChina.
XiongXiling,whostyledhimselfasBingsan,wasborninthesmallbungalowonJuly23,1870.Eveninhisboyhood,heearnedanameofHunanProdigy.Hewasasuccessfulcandidateintheimperialexamina-tionsatthecountylevelattheageof15,attheprovinciallevelattheageof21,andtocrownitall,apalacegraduateandawardedatitleofagreatscholarintheImperialAcademyattheageof24.
Havingmadeanameintheworld,hevigorouslycampaignedforconstitutionalreformandmodernization.Hestartedthereformistperiodical,theso-calledHunanNewspaper,andfoundedtheSchoolofCurrentPoliticalAffairsandtheChangdexiluNormalSchool.AsfamousasTanSitonginHunan,hewasoneofleadingforcesinthe1898ConstitutionalReformandModernizationMovement.SomeofhisstudentsbecameoutstandingrevolutionariessuchasXiangJingyu,LinBoqu,TengDaiyuan,SongJiaoren(aleftistintheNationalistParty)andJiangYiwu(Commander-in-chiefintheWuchangUprising).Heservedasfinancialinspectorofthreenortheasternpro-vinces,governorofReheprovinceandfinanceministeroftherepublic.In1913hebecameasfirstprimeministeroftheRepublicofChina.Thegovernmentheworkedinwaseulogizedas‘CabinetofTalents’.YuanShikaidissolvedthecabinetandremovedXiongfrompremiershipforhiscriticismofYuan'sdictatorialrule.Afterleavingthegovemment,XiongXilingstartedanumberofbusinessesandundertookcharitywork.HerantheXiangshanOrphanageandwhenFenghuangCountywasstruckbyaseveredroughtin1925,ruiningthericeharvest,Mr.Xiongraised100,000silverdollars,40,000ofwhichweredonatedbyMr.MeiLanfang,aneminentPekingOperaactor,forreliefefforts.Inhislatelife,Mr.XiongservedaspresidentoftheChineseRedCrossandthrewhimselfintofieldrescueworkintheWaragainstJapaneseAggression,makingoutstandingcontributionsinfightingJapaneseinvaders.Mr.XiongXilingdiedofadiseaseattheageof67inHongKongonDecember5,1937.

FenghuangCountyincludesanhistoriclandmarkthatwasformerlyknownas“ZhenGan”.ItwasthegovemmentseatoffivestockadevillagesduringtheMingandQingdynasties.Thecitywallconsistsofmudthatwasrevampedwithbricksin1556.DuringthereignofEmperorKangxi,thetownactedasthegovemmentseatfirstofthedirectlyaffiliateddistrict,thenasthedistrictdeputygovernorseat,andfinallyasthemilitaryheadquartersfortheRiverChenandYuan'slocalforces.Thecitywallwasrebuiltwithstonein1715duringQingEmperorKangxi'sreign,Itis2,000metersincircumference.Fourgatestothetownwerebuiltonfoursides,eachwithatallgatetower:theEasternGate(theGateofShengHeng),theSouthernGate(TheGateofJingLan),theWesternGate(theGateofFuCheng)andtheNorthGate(TheGateofBiHui).XueYue,thecommander-in-chiefoftheNinthTheaterofOperationsandthengovernoroftheNationalistPartyHunanProvincialGovernment,arguedin1940thatthewalledtownsweresittingducksforairstrikesandweredifficulttoevacuate.Hefurtherarguedthatoncewalledtownsfelltoenemies,itwashardtoretakethem.HethereforeorderedthatallthecitywallsinHunan'scountiesbepulleddown.Asaresult,allthewallsandgatesweredismantled,savefortheEasternGateandNorthernGate.Thesetwogateswerekeptinplacetoguardthetownagainstfloods,buttheirbattlementsandfortswereremoved.TheruinsofthebrokenwallsremainvisiblebetweentheEasternandNorthernGates.
AroadalongtheruinsofbrokenwallspassingthroughtheNorthernGatetakesyoutoasouvenirsshoppingstreet.Six-hueStorethereofferstouristsagreatvarietyofMiaonationalminorityfolkartsandhandicrafts.Youmayfindraremasterpiecesoffolkartsandhandicraftthere:tie-dyedproductsmadebyMrs.WuJinglian,aUN-certifiedmasterartistoffolkartsandhandicrafts,andMr.Xiong'sbatikprintedChinesepaintingsofwatercolour,ratedasfirstclassbytheeminentChinesepainter,ZhangDing.
TheBridgeofRainbowandtheScenicAreaofShawan
ThisistheRainbowBridge,builtduringMingDynastyHongwuEmperor'sreignandthenrenovatedin1670.Thereusedtobeastoriedpaviliononstiltsonthebridgehousingadozenshopsinit.Unfortunately,thepavilionanditsarchwaysweretorndownin1956owingtoaroadexpansionproject.
Standingunderthebridgetherearearowofcentury-oldstiltedhouses.Downbelow,dragonboatraces,atraditionalFenghuangsportsevent,areregularlyheld.DuringtheMoonCakeFestival,localpeopleturntwofreightboatsintoaracingboatandcompeteinaboatraceinthissmallriver.
Walkingdownthebridge,onecomesinsightofthreescenicspotsinShawan:theMoonlitBridgesoverStreams,theplayfulFishinDragonPool,andtheDazzlingPeaks.Thereusedtobeeightscenicwondershere,butonlythreeremainnow.
ThisisthePalaceofLongevity,alsoknownastheWaterPalaceTemple.ItwasbuiltbybusinessmenfromJiangxi.Therefore,itiscustomarilycalledtheLodgeofJiangxi.ThePalaceofLongevityisthebiggesthumanstructureinFenghuang,coveringanareaofover4,000squaremeters.
