我们首先给人物题分分类。

主要分为两种:普通人(ordinary people)和名人(celebraties)。

今天,先详细讲讲第一种——普通人。

普通人里面,ETS主要考察五种人,我们直接看一下往年的真题:

答题时只需围绕

一个品质展开

对于一个普通人来说,我们在进行回答的时候只需要围绕一个品质展开讨论,就可以套用到任何普通人的题目中去。

也就是说,准备段子时,普通人的准备原则就是2个形容词2个例子。

这些品质可以有:hard-working, intelligent, a sense of humor, brave, helpful, a sense of responsibility, knowledgeable等等。

比如,我们选取乐于助人(helpful)这个品质,那么老师、家长、上司、朋友、邻居这五类人都可以使用;

例子也可以通用,比如出差的时候照看孩子或者宠物这个例子就可以用于这五类人。

我们下面以刚刚提到的第四题作为例题来分析一下。

_小tip:我们对描述对象进行描述的时候,建议使用定语从句,用一个who来引出描述切入点。上面的描述就变成了:I really like my English teacher in my high school who has been teaching English for more than ten 这样的回答比你单句的回答要“高大上”很多,能让考官看到你的英语水平。

第三步,我们想一个理由点。

比如我们选择这个老师的课很有趣,她比较创新。

于是我们的分论点就变成:

?第四步,我们开始举例子或者作比较。

可以讲一次有趣的上课经历,比如老师上课让我们分组做游戏,赢了的小组可以赢得奖品;

也可以列举一下这个老师的上课风格,然后提出另一个老师的上课跟他作对比。

这样,一个结构完整的回答就准备好了:

注:斜体部分是要留意的地方,回答的时候加进去这些内容(情感态度词、详细的列举、逻辑连词等),能让文章听起来更自然、更有说服力,考官听了也不会觉得很单薄。

但是!

这样的回答,如果发音不错也只能拿到3分(fair);如果发音差一点那就只2分(limited)左右了。

为什么?

问题就出在了我一直跟大家强调的ETS口语评分标准之一语言使用(language use)上面。

单词的选择没有问题,没有使用写作词汇,很自然。

但是,语法问题就比较多了。

首先,时态问题。整个文章的展开都是一般说明,不存在过去时态,所以划线部分的过去时态都应该改成一般现在时态。

其次,短语及各种搭配用法不当。如give up是放弃,这里只有“给”的意思,所以改成give;of discuss这里根据句意应该是to discuss;assignment应该是复数形式,和前面的tasks平行;not also没有用对。

把这些问题都改正一下,其实就是一个满分的版本了:

我们先看一下往年的考试题目:

对于这样的题目,我们的破题方法和普通人的破题方法一样。

对于名人的回答一般理由点可以从两个方面展开:个人成就和个人品质。

? 个人成就:如果是歌手,我们可以谈论专辑数目、粉丝数量、是否原创等;如果是演员,我们可以讨论电影类型、表演特色、获得奖项等。

? 个人品质:又回归到了普通人的品质中去,如a sense of humor, have responsibilities, easy-going等。

直接上真题: Describe your favorite singer or movie

我们先来看一个学生的回答,一起挑挑错误:

接下来,严格根据托福口语评分标准来对这个回答进行评分。

(一)话题陈述 topic statement

优点:回答中有总观点(Jolin is my favorite singer),有分论点(because she made a lot of beautiful music which cheer me ),也有相应的细节(Once I got a bad )。

缺点:但是因为这个题目中带有“describe”,我们的回答结构就应该是这里欠缺人物描述。

一般说来,人物题都是需要对人物进行描述的,因为考官不认识这个人。这道题可以改成:I really like Jolin who is a popular singer in

优点:下面再来看细节。学生用了举例子的方法展开了论证,事件中包含了完整的起因、经过和结果。

缺点:小问题在于“once”的使用,我们在讲论证方法的时候就说过once这样的词太宽泛,不够具体。这里可以改为:Last month等。

(二)表达 delivery

文章整体逻辑感还不错,但是分观点和例子之间衔接不明显。也就是说分论点说完没有先解释一下就进行了举例子,感觉很生硬。这里可以加入下文斜体的句子:

(三)语言使用 language use

文中一共6句话,却出现了7处语法或用词的错误。我们一个一个看:

主谓不一致。music单数,后面应该是cheers me up

名词单复数。可数名词之前一定要有相应的冠词a/an/the;不可数名词之前什么都不加或者加some/lots of等可以修饰名词单复数的词。所以English exam应改为English exams; lyric改为lyrics; motivation改为the motivation。

语义相反。facing the challenge bravely and giving up 这句学生想表达的是:应勇敢面对困难,半途放弃不值得。但是文中的意思就变成了勇敢面对困难和中途放弃都是不值得的。应改为:we should face challenges bravely instead of giving it up

的用法。当形容物的时候,用motivating。如:the movie is really motivating;表示人得到鼓舞的时候,用motivated。如:I was really

人物类的话题虽然比较多,但是在对所有已经考过的真题仔细分析之后,其实就会发现规律,我们不需要特立独行,在考场临时去想出一套答题的思路,因为卡片上的四个小问题已经告诉我们应该从哪些方面去回答以及什么样的顺序。总体来说,可以分成3个部分。

第一部分是涉及到对第一个和第二个小问题的回答。在这部分中,通常涉及到的是人物相关背景的介绍,比如说外貌、性格、职业、年龄作为整个mini presentation的introduction部分,向考官树立起一个直观的印象。而刚刚提到的外貌、性格、职业和年龄这些点并不需要面面俱到。

第一是因为时间分配是有限的,第二是因为如果在introduction部分就说的过多,body部分就显得分量不足,而body才是整个 presentation的核心部分。所以在introduction部分只需要将刚刚提到的这几个点,从中选取几个部分进行组合,表达出来即可。比如说,可以提到职业,然后在外貌的描述中提到身高、身材、五官中最有特色的地方,目的就是为了留下深刻印象。而在表述的每一个特征的时候,也不需要一个单独的完整的句子来表达,用and 来衔接。而是可以将多个信息点融合在一个句子里面,这个句子可以包含限制或非限制性的定语从句来描述,或者是介词短语,甚至是单个的形容词。

田光识才荆柯到了燕后,与田光相识,田光知他并非一个平庸的人,非常欣赏他。恰逢燕太子丹在秦国当人质后逃回燕国,寻求报复秦王的人。鞠武推荐田光,田光推荐了荆卿。可是太子丹对田光并不信任,田光认为长者办事,应该不让人怀疑;一个人办事却让人怀疑,就算不上是有节操的侠义之人了,于是自杀。

相遇燕丹燕太子丹为了刺杀秦王,委托荆轲以大任,并且恳请荆轲不要谦让推辞,于是把荆卿尊为上卿,请他住上等宾馆。太子每天都上门问候,准备最丰盛的酒席,隔不多久就献上珍异物品,车骑之类,荆柯有感于太子丹的诚意,于是与之相谋。

谋计樊於期樊於期本为秦将,因事得罪于秦王而出逃到燕。只有得到樊将军的首级和燕国督亢的地图去奉献给秦王,秦王才会乐于接见荆轲,这样才有刺杀秦王的机会。荆轲知道太子于心不忍,便背着太子私下去见樊於期,用道理说服了他,樊於期自刎而死。

易水萧萧太子以及知道荆轲要去刺杀秦王这件事的宾客,部一身素装来送别荆轲。至易水之上。高渐离击筑,荆轲和而歌,为变徵之声,士皆垂泪涕泣。又前而为歌曰:"风萧萧分易水寒,壮士一去兮不复还!"复为羽声慷慨,士皆填目,发尽上指冠。于是荆轲就车而去,终己不顾。

谋计于蒙嘉荆轲带着价值千金的礼物,厚赠秦王宠幸的臣子中庶子蒙嘉。蒙嘉替荆轲先在秦王面前说:“燕王确实被大王的威严震慑得心惊胆战,不敢出动军队抗拒大王的将士,情愿全国上下做秦国的臣子,谨此砍下樊於期的首级并献上燕国督亢地区的地图,装匣密封。燕王还在朝廷上举行了拜送仪式,派出使臣把这种情况禀明大王,敬请大王指示。”秦王听到这个消息,非常高兴。

智解危机秦王布置九宾的礼仪,在咸阳宫接见燕国的使者。荆柯捧着有樊将军头颅的匣子,秦舞阳捧着装有地图的匣子,依次走到台阶下面。秦舞阳内心害怕,脸色突然变了,秦国的大臣对此都惊疑起来。荆轲回头对秦舞阳笑了笑,上前对秦王谢罪说:"北方边远地区的粗俗人,不曾见过天子,所以害怕,望大王宽恕。"

图穷匕见在秦殿上,荆轲取出地图捧着它献给秦王,地图展完了,匕首忽然露了出来。荆轲乘势用左手抓住秦王的衣袖,用右手迅速拿起匕首向秦王胸口刺去。匕首没有刺到秦王,秦王大惊,吓得连连后退,绕着朝堂上的大铜柱子跑。荆轲紧紧地逼着。旁边虽然有许多官员,但是都手无寸铁;台阶下的武士,按秦国的规矩,没有秦王命令是不准上殿的,秦王拨出了剑,砍断了荆轲的左腿。荆轲站立不住,倒在地上。他拿匕首直向秦王扔过去,却没有击中。武士们这时冲上来,把荆轲杀死了。
