The snipe said angrily:

"If it doesn't rain for one or two days, there will be no water. And youcan't return to the river, then surely you will die anyway."

At the end of the Qin Dynasty(221-206 B.C.) the State of Chu and the Stateof Han fought for control for the country. Xiang Yu, the king of Chu, wasbesieged(包围) at a place called Gaixia by the Han army led by Liu Bang. Xiang Yuwas in a desperate situation, with little food and only a few soliders. Atnight, the surrounding Han troops started to sing Chu folk songs. Xiang Yu wasvery surprised at this, and said:"Has Liu Bang occupied the whole of Chu? Howcan he have drafted so many Chu people into his army?" Then he fled togetherwith the remainder of his forces.

On a vacation trip, Duke Huan of the state of Qi came to the ruin of thecapital of Guo Shi , which perished long ago.

Seeing the desolate and bleak prospects of broken tiles, collapsed walls, and clusters of weeds, he could not help asking the local people about thereason of the ruin of Guo Shi.

They replied,"Guo Shi was fond of doing good deeds, and averse toevildoing, which led to the perdition."

When the Duke could not understand the answer, people explained ," Thoughhe liked doing good, he had never been able to do so; though he hated evildoing, never could he help not participating. That caused the ruin of his capital."

The king of Qi sent Chunyu Kun to the state of Zhao (赵国) to ask for help, with a lot of valuable gifts.

The king of Zhao accpeted the gifts gladly and sent a hundred thousandtroops to help Qi.

The king of Chu withdrew his army that very night as soon as he got thenews.

During the meal, the king asked Chunyu Kun, "How much wine can you drinkbefore you're drunk, Sir?"

Knowing the king had a bad habit of drinking all night, Chunyu Kun decidedto take this chance to admonish the king. So he replied, "I get drunk when Idrink ten litres or hundred."

Puzzled, the king asked, "Since you are drunk after ten litres, how can youfinish another ninty litres?"

Chunyu Kun then explained that he could drink different amounts of wineunder different conditions. He said, "This occurs to me that when you drink toyour limit, you get so drunk that you lose your sense; once joy reaches itsheight, then it's sorrow's turn. This is the rule for everything. Whatever youdo, you are bound to end up in the opposite direction when you exceed thelimits."

Once upon a time the fox was talking to the wolf about the strength of man,how no animal could withstand him, and how all were obliged to employ cunning inorder to protect themselves from him.

The wolf answered, "If I could see a man just once, I would attack himnonetheless."

"I can help you to do that," said the fox. "Come to me early tomorrowmorning, and I will show you one."

The wolf arrived on time, and the fox took him out to the path which thehuntsman used every day. First an old discharged soldier came by. "Is that aman?" asked the wolf.

"No," answered the fox. "He has been one."

Afterwards came a little boy on his way to school.

"Is that a man?"

"No, he will yet become one."

Finally a huntsman came by with his double-barreled gun on his back, and asword at his side.

The fox said to the wolf, "Look, there comes a man. He is the one you mustattack, but I am going back to my den."

The wolf then charged at the man.

When the huntsman saw him he said, "Too bad that I have not loaded with abullet." Then he aimed and fired a load of shot into his face.

The wolf pulled an awful face, but did not let himself be frightened, andattacked him again, on which the huntsman gave him the second barrel. The wolfswallowed his pain and charged at the huntsman again, who in turn drew out hisnaked sword, and ggave him a few blows with it left and right, so that, bleedingall over, he ran howling back to the fox.

"Well," Brother Wolf, said the fox, "how did you get along with man?"

"Oh," replied the wolf, "I never imagined the strength of man to be what itis. First, he took a stick from his shoulder, and blew into it, and thensomething flew into my face which tickled me terribly. Then he breathed oncemore into the stick, and it flew up my nose like lightning and hail. Then when Igot next to him, he drew a naked rib out of his body, and he beat me so with itthat he almost killed me."

"See what a braggart you are," said the fox. "You throw your hatchet so farthat you cannot get it back again."

Father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling amongthemselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, hedetermined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; andfor this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When theyhad done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.

He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one,and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He thenaddressed them in these words: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite toassist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts ofyour enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken aseasily as these sticks.”

One day the king of animals asked a cat to see how his palace was built. After a few hours, the little cat came back and said to the tiger, “Oh, yourpalace is very large, tall and beautiful. ”Several days later the tiger asked apig to see it. He said, “Go and see how my palace is built. ”But when the pigcame back, he said to the tiger, “My dear king, I thought your palace isbeautiful, but it suits yourself only. ”

The tiger was very surprised when he heard it. “Why are the cat’s and thepig’s answers not the same? ”he said to himself. He then asked a camel to go tohave a look. Before long the camel ran back out of breath and said to the tiger,“Oh, your palace is too small for you to live in, my king. ”

The king became very angry when he heard what the camel said. He said tothe animals angrily, “Maybe somebody of you tell lies. Three people have threeideas. I want to kill you. ”Just at the moment, a fox came out to stop the tigerfrom doing that. He asked the tiger himself to go to see it before killingthem.

After the tiger saw the palace himself, he thought that their answers wereall right. He said to the animals, “To see with one’s own eyes is more importantthan only to hear others. ”

The growth of Fable: never do an apple tree apple tree growth, and finallyresult.

The first year, which end of the 10 apples, nine were taken away, theyreceive one. In this regard, apple anyway, so cut off its own channel, refusedto grow up. The following year, the end of its five apples, four were takenaway, they receive one. "Ha ha, I was given last year by 10%, 20% this year!Doubled." Psychological balance of the apple tree.

However, it can do: continue to grow. For example, the second year, whichend of the 100 fruit, 90 were taken away, they receive 10.

It may well be that it was taken away 99, they receive one. However, Itdoes not matter, it can continue to grow and fruit year end 1000 ... ...

In fact, how much fruit is not the most important. Most importantly, theapple trees grow! Such as apple trees grow into giant trees, when those who havehindered the growth of the power it will be weak to be negligible. Really, donot care too much fruit, growth is most important.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work of children's literature by the British mathematician and author, Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by talking playing cards and anthropomorphic creatures. The tale is fraught with satirical allusions to Dodgson's friends and to the lessons that British schoolchildren were expected to memorize. The Wonderland described in the tale plays with logic in ways that has made the story of lasting popularity with children as well as adults. The book is often referred to by the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland. Some printings of this title contain both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass. This alternate title was popularized by the numerous film and television adaptations of the story produced over the years

At the end of the Qin Dynasty(221-206 B.C.) the State of Chu and the State of Han fought for control for the country. Xiang Yu, the king of Chu, was besieged(包围) at a place called Gaixia by the Han army led by Liu Bang. Xiang Yu was in a desperate situation, with little food and only a few soliders. At night, the surrounding Han troops started to sing Chu folk songs. Xiang Yu was very surprised at this, and said:"Has Liu Bang occupied the whole of Chu? How can he have drafted so many Chu people into his army?" Then he fled together with the remainder of his forces.

This idiom is used metaphorically to mean to be in a helpless and critical situation, surrounded by the enemy on all sides.

During the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), prince Zhou Xu of the State of Wei killed his brother and became the new emperor. Zhou Xu was a tyrant. He oppressed his people and indulged in wars of agGREssion. By launching wars, he tried to divert the people's attention and reduce their discontent with him in order to consolidate his dictatorship.

The Duke of the State of Lu leant about Zhou Xu's usurpation of state power and his ambitious plan, he asked a senior official, "What do you think about Zhou Xu's move? "The official answered, "He indulges in wars , bringing his people much disaster. He won't get their support. And he's capricious, so few of his close friends follow him. He can never achieve his success. In addition, war is like fire. If one launches wars endlessly without restraint, he'll eventually burn himself. "

Sure enough, the people of Wei with the help of the State of Chen overthrew Zhou Xu and killed him in less than a year.

Later, people use it to mean that those who do evil will finally ruin themselves.

Imitating Another without Success and Losing What Used to Be One'sOwn Ability

Tradition has it that more than 2,oooyears ago, there lived a young man in the Shouling area of the State of Yan.As his name is not known ,we just call him Shouling young man for convenience's sake.

self confident He was at a loss as to how to behave all the time.

His family members advised him to overcome this shortcoming, but he thought they were fond of poking their noses into his business and were unwilling to provide him with tuition fee.His relatives and neighbours sneered at him, saying that he would never be able to learn anything.Asthe days went by,he even began to doubt whether he should walk the way he did,for he felt more and more that his walking gestures were too clumsy and awkward.

One day,he met some people on the road who werechattingand laughing. One of themsaid that people in Handan walked most gracefully. And thatwas just what he was most concerned about,so he hurreed towards themand wanted to make further inquiries. To his surprise, when these people saw him, they stalked off laughing.

He could not picture to himself in what way their walking gestures were graceful,no matter how hard he racked his parents one day.He went to Handanwhich was far away to learn how to walk.

As soon as he arrived in Handan,he was dazzled to find that everything was novel. He learned from the children there how to walk, because he thought that the children's walking gestures were lively and pleasing to the eye.He learnd from the old people there how to walk, because he thought the old people's walking gestures were steady .He learnd from the women there how to walk, because he thought the women' swaying walking gestures were beautiful. That being the case with him ,in less than half a month he even forgot how to walk.As he had already used up his traveling expenses,he had to crawl back home.

Thisstory come from the article"Autumn Water"in The Works of Xhuang Zi(Zhuang Zi was a famous ancient Chinese philosopher of about 300B.c.).Later the set phrase"initating another without success and losing what used to be one's own ability"is used to refer to acts of copying others mechanisally in disregard of specififc conditions.

Once a man wanted to go to the south, but his carriage was heading north. A passer-by asked him:"If you are going to south, why is your chariot heading north?" The ma answered, "My horse is good at running, My driver is highly skilled at driving a carriage, ad I have enough money."The man didint consider that the direction might be wrong; the better his conditions were, ther further he was away from his destination.

The idiom derived froim this story indicates that one's action was the opposite effect to one's intention.

I like Christmas, it is just like our Spring Festival.

Maybe the Spring Festival is much more important and interesting than Christmas, but I like Christmas Day better. Because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during Christmas. When it is snowy,

Christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. I can imagine I am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on.

What a beautiful place! So we can also call Christmas “Snowy Lovely Day.”

On Christmas Day, shops are red and green. There are so many Christmas cards, Christmas hats, Christmas dolls and many colourful things. So shops look very beautiful. We can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “Merry Christmas.” By the way, I think studying can also become much more interesting.

Christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. Let’s study harder to welcome.

Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything? The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

TESS is really a tragic figure in the book TESS of the d’Urberwilles. She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. People looked down on her and respected her no more. Actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men. She was just a girl when she first met that terrible man. Without Angel’s love, nothing meant anything to her. The result wasn’t important now. Tess was arrested for her murder of that so-called gentleman. Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so she lost her innocence and that’s all. People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls. Now let’s not be so bitter. Nowadays women’s situations have become much better. Some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization. Just let those poor painful women like TESS be just a memory.
