When it comes to honesty, quite a lot of people believe it is essential toa person’s character and success.
They base their idea on the following reasons: on one hand, successfulbusiness owes much to mutual trust; on another hand, great people in historysuch as Abraham Lincoln andGeorge Washington set us good examples of beinghonest, they are great because they are honest.
Their reasons run as following: to begin with, cheating on exams isbecoming more and more popular; in addition, some singers and movie stars cheaton taxes; last but not the least, if you are not careful enough, you’ll buy somedefective goods and fake products.
It is high time we emphasized and encouraged honesty. We can take effectivemeasures to restore it.
For example, kids should be taught to tell truth, strict rules andregulations should be carried out to stop cheatings on exams and taxes, etc.
Today, with the development of Internet, many traditional ways of life havebeen changed, especially the way to pay for purchase. The record of creditoccupies important role for everybody, and they need good credit to get loan, soas to start their business or buy a house. We have come to the age ofcredit.
There is a very classic example about the importance of credit. A Chineseman took the train in Europe. He found no one checked the ticket, so he justskipped the ticket. He thought he had saved the little money, but when he cameto the bank and wanted to get the loan, he got rejected, because his record ofcredit showed he had skipped the ticket, which made him the unreliable man.
The record of credit is the main basis when people asked for loan. Thebanks consider the account of money they would borrow according to the credit,or the departments will check a person’s credit to see if they want to hire him.The age of credit asks for us to behave ourselves well, or we will live thetough life.
People always attach the importance to the promise, they hate people whobreak their promise. I remember once a time, my friend asked me to go to see themovie with her, I said yes without hesitation. But on that day, I forgot aboutthe date, I just woke up late and then played computer games in my bedroom. Myfriends called me, she asked why did I disappear, I said I was sleeping at home, she became very angry, until then did I think about our date. I felt so sorry, Ibreak my promise for the first time, I realize I did the very bad thing. Eventhough I apologized for many times, my friend was still angry with me. I learnthe lesson, promise is very important, we must keep it, other people will seethrough our personality to decide what kind of person we are.
Everybody knows that telling lies is not right, so we have been educated tobe an honest person. My parents tell me that no matter what kind of difficulty Imeet, I should tell them first, because they will stand by my side all the time.So I never lie to my parents. They care about me and give me enough love andtrust.
Recently, I have seen an impressive film—“Meet the Parents”, which is abouta woman Palm brought her boyfriend Greg to her parents’ home to spend holiday. In the film, Greg was so dishonest to Palm’s parents that Palm’s father issuspicious of his behavior and quality. As a result, Greg is obnoxious to alland has to leave. As far as I am concerned, the consequence is heavily caused byhis dishonesty. If Greg could be real him all the time, he would get muchrespect and appreciation and would not get much frustration. From the film, Ihave learned that being honest was extremely important and necessary. In otherwords, being honest is a basic principle for us to deal with others.
For one thing, we will not get others’ trust unless we are honest. If wedeceive others, we would get the same in return, and even no one would makefriends with us or even communicate with us. For another, we will get others’respect and appreciation if telling the truth. Telling the truth and beingourselves, we will get a healthy and peaceful surrounding to grow up better.
However, something strange happens in our society. There is a strangephenomenon that honest people suffer but the dishonest benefit a lot. It madesome people have a suspicion that being honest is not so important.
But I still believe that these are just a few cases, since honesty isdeeply rooted in our minds and we still consider it as a basic principle insocial contacts.
