全世界的水是一个有联系的整体，今天地球上我们拥有的水量和几千年前是一样的。地球表面的水在太阳辐射能和地心引力的相互作用下，不断地蒸发和蒸腾到大气中，并在空中形成云，在大气环流的作用下传播到不同的地域，再以降雨或降雪等形式回到海洋或陆地的表面。这些降水，一部分渗入地下，成为土壤水或地下水；一部分形成地表径流汇入江、海，再经蒸发进入大气圈；还有一部分直接蒸发或经植物吸收而蒸腾进入大气。这种过程循环往复，永无止境。
水循环是自然界自己的净化系统。通过循环，水资源得到不断的更新。在较长时间内，全球范围的蒸发与降水基本保持平衡，但在一定时间、空间范围内，其数量极为有限，并不像人们想象的那样可以取之不尽、用之不竭。不同形态水的循环速率差异很大，除生物水外，大气水和河流水的循环更替期最短，更新利用率高，是最活跃、最重要，也是于人类和生物生长发育最密切的水资源。
来之不易的自来水拧开水龙头，清洁甘冽的水便滚滚而来。其实，自来水来之不易。它们可能取自几百米深的地下，或是引自几十公里、几百公里远的某条江河、某座水库。这些“原水”，首先要在净水厂净化，曝气除去铁质，然后用混凝的办法除去细小的漂浮物、水生物，再沉淀下杂质，用液体氯、漂白粉等消毒剂杀死细菌。经过检查化验，符合国家标准后，才能像其他工业产品一样出厂。清洁的水，经过密如蜘蛛网的管道，并且用水泵加压，才保证送到高层建筑或居民院里的千家万户。

地表水：如果你曾在山上呆过，也许在附近的水库和河流边看到标志，提示你不要游泳，因为种种原因那是与饮用水的一个分水岭，那儿也许还有告示牌提示你不要乱扔垃圾造成环境污染。分水岭是地表水流向水库，湖泊之类的蓄水处要经过的区域，一段山脉或其它高地。在区别一个分水岭与另一个分水岭的高地区域——分水线，一边的溪流与另一边的溪流流向不同的方向。在一个分水岭中，水流会经过渗透过滤进入蓄水层，重新补充地表和地下水源。这个过程会过滤掉油和细菌，沉淀之类的不干净物质。
